My name is Carolyn Jackson, and for the past ten years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as executive director of The Banker’s House, a treasured historic landmark on the edge of uptown Shelby. Over the past decade, I’ve had the honor of working alongside an extraordinary group of people to restore, preserve, and reimagine this unique property as a vibrant space for community engagement and special events.
When I first began this journey, The Banker’s House Foundation had just been established to steward this remarkable site—a rare Second Empire-style home built in 1875—along with its surrounding grounds and outbuildings. Once a private residence, the house was generously donated by George and Nancy Blanton to be shared with the community. A group of dedicated citizens, including myself, was asked to help chart a vision for the property’s future.
Today, that vision has come to life. The Banker’s House campus now includes a beautifully restored carriage house and barn, along with expanded grounds—thanks to the recent gift of three adjoining lots from the daughters of the Blanton family. With more than three acres bordering uptown Shelby, the property serves as both a historic site and a thriving venue for public and private events.
Under the leadership of the Foundation, with the help of staff, a volunteer Advisory Council, and countless community members, The Banker’s House has become a hub of activity. We host monthly historic tours, an annual Christmas Reveal featuring festive decorations by local volunteers, and our signature fundraiser—Run for the Roses, a Kentucky Derby-themed event that supports summer day camps for rising fifth graders, including participants from the Boys & Girls Club and the foster care system. Additional funds help support preservation and capital improvements across the property. The venue also stays active year-round with weddings, receptions, and private rentals that bring even more people through our doors.
This decade has been a meaningful chapter in both the life of The Banker’s House and my own. As I prepare to retire, I am excited to pass the torch to May Reed, who will begin as the new executive director on August 1, 2025. May brings a deep appreciation for the history of the house, a diverse background of professional experience, and a fresh vision for what lies ahead.
It has been an honor to serve this place and this community. I look forward to watching The Banker’s House continue to thrive in its next chapter.
A Word from New Executive Director May Reed:
To call this my dream job would be an understatement. I’ve been captivated by The Banker’s House since moving to Shelby four years ago. Originally from eastern North Carolina, I spent more than 30 years living and working in Virginia—but returning to my Tar Heel roots was always the plan. Shelby welcomed us with open arms. From its rich history and small-town charm to its incredible sense of community, this place quickly felt like home.
My husband, Randy, and I have settled in beautifully. You’ll often spot us walking our rescue lab, Sadie, who came to us through Clifford’s Army Rescue. We have grown twins—our daughter and her husband live in New York City, and our son lives in Charleston, South Carolina. Both are wonderful places to visit and a joy to be part of our story.
Professionally, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in Shelby’s vibrant community life. I joined Cleveland Country Club in 2022 as Marketing Director and later served as Director of Food and Beverage. In 2024, I took on a new challenge with Paradise Landscape as their Marketing, Special Events, and Communications Specialist.
From the moment I met Carolyn Jackson, I was inspired by her passion, vision, and warmth. Our friendship has grown, and it’s an honor to step into the role she has shaped so thoughtfully. Carrying forward the legacy of The Banker’s House is both a responsibility and a joy. I am deeply excited about the possibilities ahead and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the next chapter in the life of this historic treasure.
